The author of this passage comes to the conclusion that his stores should discontinue stocking any imported cheeses and focus instead on domestic cheeses in order to make profits. In surpporting his claim, the author points out the preference for domestic cheeses of customers in the newest store and the survey made by Cheese of the World magazine. However, his argument does not make a cogent case since it is filled with unanswered logical flaws and unproved assumptions.

The author claims that during last year, the best selling cheeses in the newest store were all domestic cheeses which indicates people are more fond of domestic cheeses than imported ones. Nonetheless, the author fails to take into account the other stores throughout the United States. It is highly possible that situations in other stores were totally different with the top five cheeses being all imported ones last year, which means a preference for imported cheeses. Or the other stores showed similar selling preferences for domestic and imported cheeses. Thus, using one particular store as example is not convincing enough to validate the author’s claim.

Additionally, the author uses as proof the survey made by Cheeses of the World to illustrate his point. The recent survey made by this magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses. However, we do not know how many of its subscribers took apart in this investigation or the way of research used by this survey. Perhaps only ten people participated in this inquiry, or the participants were asked to choose their favorite cheeses between twenty brands of domestic cheeses and only two imported brands, which may easily swayed the participants toward domestic ones. It is also possible that several domestic cheeses companies have been making appealling advertisements on this magazine, and thus most of its subscribers are frequent customers of these particular brands. We just do not know. Consequently, before the author provides more information about this survey, we cannot seem to be persuaded by his claim.

Even if the domestic cheeses are indeed selling better than imported ones, blindly reducing the stocking for imported cheeses might not be able to lead to increased profits like the author professed. Chances are that this chain of cheese shores are famous for their wide choice of different cheeses, both domestic brands and imported ones. Thus, if the stores suddenly cut down the supply of imported cheeses, a considerable amount of its coustomers would get disappointed about its service and tend to buy cheeses from its competitors which still serve a wide range of cheese choices. Consequently, this operation of reducing stocking to cut down on costs might eventually lead to a decrease in customers, and thus to a decreased profits. So before the author provides enough evidence to eliminate all these possibilities, we can not say for sure that the stores would make more profits.

Although it is true that reducing stocking can decrease the costs of renting warehouses and managerial staff, but before the author could find a way to answer all of the above questions relating to the holes of his argument, he cannot come to the conclusion that cutting the stocking of imported cheeses can lead to growing profits.
