These days, more and more people are getting the latest news

from a screen rather than a paper. Yet many people still find it exciting

to open a freshly printed newspaper to discover what’s in it. One of

the most popular dailies in the United States is The New York Times.

Every night, the paper gets printed at 26 plants across the country.

College Point, built in 1997, is the biggest among them.

If you ever have a chance to visit College Point, you will be impressed by many things. The

first among them is perhaps the paper rolls. Each of them is half as heavy as a car (that is, about

900 kilograms). They are moved from the storage to the printing presses(印刷机)with the help of

three robotic arms.

Finished newspaper pages are sent digitally from the newsroom to the plant. During a print

run, they can print as many as 80,000 newspapers per hour. The noise of the running presses is

awful. Each press is shut down for one shift (轮班) each week. Press workers will then climb

inside to maintain (保养) the machine’s key parts.

Sometimes, news breaks during a press run. If it’s important enough, the newsroom will call

to “Stop the presses!” Often, the copies that have already been printed won’t be thrown away, but

the rest of the night’s run will be based on the updated version.

Usually, all print runs of The New York Times are completed by

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the wet cold of

Dennis’s Swamp (沼泽地) moving slowly into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom

wished that they had not accepted Jack’s dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.

“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name?”

“Are you sure you want to hear it? It’s a scary story,” warned Jack.

“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn’t have

“OK, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.

there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different—it was covered with tall trees and

the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and

planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.

“You are clearing too much land,” warned one old man. “The land is a living thing. It will hit

wealthier. He’ s just jealous(妒忌的)!”

“Dennis continued to cut down trees. Small animals were disappearing. He was so eager to

expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice

salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native

plants.”

“What happened?” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He shook slightly, moving closer to

folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater.

His body was never found.”

“What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can’t…” Before he had finished speaking, he

For people, who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is certainly making

noise. In the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of

today’s sound engineers are sharing their knowledge and experience with engineers in other fields

to create new products based on the phenomenon(现象) we call sound.

Sound can be used as an instrument. Imagine that a police officer is running after a thief. The

thief tries to run away. And the officer can't let him get away. He pulls out a special device, points

it at the suspect, and turns it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new instrument is called a

Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it

temporarily(暂时) disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and

travels only into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.

For those who search for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let's imagine

you are at the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming(哼唱)a short

advertisement song. He hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the

Silence Machine, a British invention, you can get rid of (摆脱)the sound without making the boy

or his parents unhappy. One may wonder how the Silence Machine works, Well, it works by

analyzing (分析)the waves of the incoming sound and creating a second set of outgoing waves.

The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine or point it at the specific

A. Grasp all, lose all.

33.What lesson can we learn from the story of Dennis?

area, and your peace and quiet comes back.

Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same

way spotlights are used in the theater (as shown in the picture on the left). A spotlight lights up

only one part of a stage; similarly, a “spotsound” creates a circle of sound in the special area. This

can be useful for businesses such as restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract

customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of music along with different kinds of food choices on

the menu, allowing customers more control over the mood in which they are dining. Directed

sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and even at homes.

34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the LRAD?

A. It causes hearing loss for a short time. B. It does great harm to people’s hearing.

C. It forces a running person to slow down. D. It helps police to find a suspect easily.

35. The Silence Machine is specially designed to_______________.

A. collect the incoming sound waves B. stop unwanted sound influencing you

C. remove the sound of advertisements D. silence the noisy people around you

36. What feature do spot sounds and spotlights share?

A. They travel in a special circle. B. They are used in restaurants and stores.

C. They can be turned into energy. D. They can be directed onto a special area.

37. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. How sound products are invented

C. The interest in the study of sound.

B. How sound engineers work in their studios.

D. Inventions in the field of sound technology.

六、阅读填空

It’s OK to say you’ve never heard of grime(伦敦地下音乐) — unless you’re from the UK.

That’s because this music type was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.

To someone who doesn’t know much about underground music culture, it’s not easy to tell

the difference between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn’t even

want to know it, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and Hus led this year’s

Mobo —“music of black origin”, an award in the UK. Just like UK electronic music and hip-hop,

from which grime drew influence, it mostly shows the thoughts of young people. But different

from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects(方言) with strong accents, giving a special taste to

their songs.

Lady Leshurr, known as the “Grime Queen”, said that she once tried to hide her accent, as

she didn’t want to be laughed at. But one day, she realized that she didn’t need to change herself

just to please others. And there’s no doubt that this is the soul(灵魂) of grime music: be yourself.

Grime has challenged modern music in its expressions. It is also different from the hip-hop

culture, which is mainly about being rich. Grime singers pay more attention to what happens in

society like those who are badly influenced by disasters and the gap between the rich and the poor.

Although still quite a young music type, grime seems to be getting loved by more and more

people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album

Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead.

However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted widely or not, one thing is for sure: in

grime, singers always stay true to themselves.
