The root prefix-‘sub’

“前缀词根”——“sub”

‘sub’ – is a Latin word that expresses the following ideas:

“sub”——是一个表示下列含义的拉丁语单词：

1. ‘under’ or ‘down’, for example: from ‘sub’ + ‘ducere’, meaning

literally ‘to lead under’ from which we get the English word ‘subdue’.

“在……之下”或“在下面”，例如：由“sub” + “ducere”，其字面含义为“在……

的领导之下”，从中我们引申出了英语单词“subdue”（征服、使屈服）。

2. ‘close to’ or ‘next to’, for example from ‘sub’ + ‘urbs’, from which

we get ‘suburb’ .

“在……附近”或“和……相邻”，例如由“sub” + “urbs”，从中我们引申出了

英语单词“suburb”（郊区、城郊）。

The form of the ‘root prefix’ ‘sub’ is governed by spelling rules, which are

set out below:

1. The ‘root prefix’ ‘sub’ does not change form before words that begin

with vowels or any of the following consonants: b, d, j, l, n, s, t, and v. For

example:

t和v开头的单词之前不改变其形态。例如：

‘subordinare’

= sub + ordinare

from which we get the English word: ‘subordinate’
