For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “ We can do without

railways.” People say…as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all

keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, and that they’re dying .But this is

far from the truth: in these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive

with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are

cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line

and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another.

It doesn’t leave you up as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold

you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams, and a single train carry goods which a plane or

a motorcar could never do.

Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth,

untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene

while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have

just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon

we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorcars we can’t use because we have not enough

money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason..

41.Some people think the railways are unnecessary for many reasons except that .

A.planes and motorcars have taken the place of trains

B.oil is expensive today

C.trains are slow

D.railways lose money

42.According to the writer, which of the following is Not true?

A.It is cheaper to travel by train than by plane.

B.The railway station is usually at the center of the city.

C.When you get off the plane you will find yourself right in the city center.

D.No motorcar or plane can carry as many goods as a train does.

43.The writer thinks that the railways, far from being dead, are very much alive because .

A.we can have a smooth and untroubled journey

B.we’ll not have enough money to fly in planes

C.we can now travel in super-fast train

D.all of the above

44.The best title for this passage may be” ”

A.Not the End but the Beginning

B.Which is the Best: Train, Motorcar or Plane

C.Trains are More Competitive than Motorcars or Planes

D.Oh, Super-fast Trains

Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young

person thinking of going on to the stage is “Don’t!” But it is useless苑to try to discourage

someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slight. The

normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and gift

are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with

a theatrical company, usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that

there is to do in the theatre: painting scenery, publicity, taking care of the costumes, and even

acting very small parts. It is very hard work indeed: the hours are long and the salary is tiny.

Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this

long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in bicycle

factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop,

as he drove past in his car, so he stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if

she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking .Then

she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to

make Connie believe that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks

she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actor of the day. But chances

like this happen once in a blue moon!

45.From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession .

A.too many are after B.too difficult for young people

D.for young people only

C.for ambitious people only

46.For someone who feels he must act, the author thinks it is very possible that .

A.he will become a film producer very soon

B.he will surely become a stage manager

C.he will be surely as well paid as any famous actor or actress

D.he will end up without any success

47.A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself .

A.the most famous actress of the world

B.playing the leading female part in a film

C.as famous as the greatest actor of the world

D.no less famous than the leading actor of the day

48.The concluding sentence” chances like this happen once in a blue moon” means .

A.this is something that happens once in a while B.this is a highly profitable chance

C.this is something highly possible D.this is a very rare happening

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and

in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.

Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day this news appeared

on Page Two of the town’s newspaper. The Beldon Post.

FIRE AT SEABREEZE

Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in

a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our

visitors,” Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire for

five years.

The canfield times gave the news in these words on Page One:

ANOTHER BELDON HOTEL CATCHES FIRE

Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and some

furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said,” An electric lamp probably started

the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned the bedside light

on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp .” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of

adventure does not happen in Canfield.

What are the facts then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There

was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel 1 August: that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes,

we know that firemen went to the hotel.

49.

The Canfield Times

used the headline like this in order to make its readers think .

A.this was the second fire at the Seabreeze Hotel

B.hotels in Beldon often catch fire

C.hotels in Beldon don’t often catch fire

D.Beldon was a good place except that hotels there are not quite safe

st

50.The Canfield newspaper gave a report just opposite to The Beldon Post by saying that

A.the bedroom lamps were very old at some of the Seabreeze’s hotels

B.the bedroom lights made funny noise when the fire took place

C.the firemen failed to save clothing, bedclothes and other things

D.such accidents never happened in Canfield for the past five years

51.The “ angry holiday-maker” .
