The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more
ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my
undergraduate communications class. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his
humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’
perspectives, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he
left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,”
Valencia says.
One day, I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that
semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have
his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my
communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to
find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as
any of the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition
but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and
benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard
Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12
years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a

four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs
all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the
youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating. Valencia’s grade in my class this
semester will not show up on his transcripts(

When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed an exam, her heart sank. She’d
failed that test weeks earlier, and needed more work to advance her own career. But instead of
anxiety, she called her friend. “I congratulated her and told her she inspired me,” she says.
She was surprised when it changed her attitude, so she could share her friend’s happiness and
experience her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call
freudenfreude, a term that describes the joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it
isn’t directly connected with us. Freudenfreude is like social glue, says Catherine Chambliss,
a professor of psychology at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. It makes relationships “closer
and more enjoyable”. Sharing in someone else’s joy can also improve life satisfaction and

resilience(

) and help people cooperate during a disagreement.
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn’t always come easily.
Sometimes, your loss might last, making freudenfreude feel out of reach. If you were raised
in a family that paired winning with self-worth, Chambliss says, you might misread someone
else’s victory as your own personal shortcoming. And factors such as mental health and
overall wellbeing(
幸福
) can also affect your ability to participate in someone else’s joy. Still,
freudenfreude is worthwhile and there are ways to encourage the feeling.
Instead of an automatic response, freudenfreude is often an active process. To help
people strengthen joy-sharing muscles, Chambliss and her colleagues developed a
programme called FreudenfreudeEnhancement Training (FET). They found that depressed
people who used the practices for two weeks had an easier time expressing freudenfreude,
which built up their relationships and improved their mood.
Jean Grae, an artist, supports friends in this mindset. When someone gets a new
opportunity or reaches a milestone, she makes sure to celebrate. Grae says she’s especially
moved when anyone considered ‘other’ succeeds. “It’s truly inspirational,” she says, “because
it lifts us all up and makes us shine.”

Since 2001, robotic tools have revolutionized the practice of surgery. They have greatly
reduced the stress and physical demands normally placed on surgeons and have made certain
procedures possible.
One example is “keyhole surgery”, or minimally invasive (
微创
) surgery, which
normally requires surgeons to stand at awkward angles and make difficult movements with
their hands to make a cut inside the patient. But in June 2022, surgeon James Ansell used 3D
glasses and two sticks to control four robotic arms to perform a procedure to remove a
cancerous tumor. “My that this feels like cheating,” Ansell said to The
Guardian.
Another area of surgery that has had major technological breakthroughs in recent years
is telesurgery. Normally, telesurgery relies on a wired connection due to concerns of harming
the patient should a wireless connection drop during surgery, but China made several
advancements in wireless telesurgery based on 5G technology.
China achieved the first 5G-based remote operation in March 2019 involving a brain
surgery procedure between a surgeon in Sanya and a patient in Beijing, a distance totaling
nearly 3,000 kilometers. More recently, a team of surgeons successfully completed remote
micron-level eye surgery on rabbits located in a different city. The rabbits were at the Sun
Yat-sen University in Guangzhbù, Guangdon g province, whereas the surgical team who
operated on them via a 5G robot were at the Hainan Eye Hospital in Haikou, Hainan
province.
Looking to the future, people hope that remote surgery could become commonplace to
help heal injured soldiers on the battlefield while keeping surgeons at a safe distance. Some
even believe that robotic systems, combined with AI, could one day exceed human surgeons.
But, given current technological limitations and the high costs of these robots which can
cost millions of dollars, the complete robot takeover of surgery may still be a while off.

Resolving
(
解决
) Conflict in Friendships
Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. 16 That's because
there isn't enough depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement.
Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen
and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they
don't go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it
happens so that in the morning, it's a fresh start with no past grudge (
怨恨
). I've found I need
a short cool down period so that I don't act in anger. 17 Whatever you do, don't let
things ride for too long.
18 Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the
other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various
talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend
is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive. Yet
it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.
