Have you ever used a needle(针) and thread(线) to sew(缝纫)? What did you think of it?

When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother’s sister’s

house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, I went outside to play in the yard

while they all sat around the kitchen table to talk.

After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were

doing.

On the kitchen table was a large homemade quilt that was still being sewn together.

Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great aunt sewed

a little piece of cloth onto the quilt. I looked over at one edge of the quilt and saw a piece of

thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.

“No! ” It was my grandmother’s voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever

remember her yelling at me. Seeing the frightened look on my face, she smiled and showed

me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread wove (穿行)in and out of the different

pieces of cloth.

Like a twisting road, it made its way from one end of the quilt to the other. If I pulled on

it, I would have pulled the quilt apart and ruined (毁掉) hours of work.

As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that

thread in the quilt. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help

hold everything together. That’s our purpose—help and support the people around us.

In China, there is a prize called the Pineapple Science Award. It is given to scientists

who are interested

Nov 13,2021,10 fun studies received Pineapple Science

Awards. Let’s look at three of them.

No big fan of music

The prize for medicine went to an international research team who studied mosquitoes

(蚊子).

Their study showed that the next time you see mosquitoes, perhaps you want to play

music.

Researchers put mosquitoes and a hamster (仓鼠) together in two environments. One

had no music and the other had a speaker playing electronic dance music. Mosquitoes waited

longer to bite the hamster if they heard the music. It seems that they don’t like listening to

electric dance music.

Contagious (有传染性的) behavior

When your friends check their phones, do you do the same? The prize for psychology

went to study on this. Italian researchers found that looking at your phone makes other people

around you do the same in less than a minute. This is because humans subconsciously (下意试卷第3页,共8页

识地) copy the actions of other people. “We have a need to match our actions with those of

other people,”said the researcher Elisabetta Palagi. That’s also why yawns (打哈欠) are so

contagious.

Smarter than humans?

We all know chimpanzees (黑猩猩) can be quite clever, but we probably don’t think

they could beat university students in math. A study by researchers from Kyoto University in

Japan won this year’s award for math. Comparing a chimpanzee named Abu and a group of

university students, the researchers found that Abu could remember numbers more quickly

and more correctly than the students.

The fun ways to learn English

English learning is of great importance to us. Here, I will introduce some fun ways to learn

English. To begin with, I watch English movies that are full of humor. Second, I learn English by

singing some English songs or listening to them. Last, I often watch popular YouTube videos for

some minutes.
