Donald Trump was born in Queens, a borough of New York City. He was the fourth child. He had two

brothers and two sisters. By his own telling, young Donald often created trouble in school. So when he was 13 years old,

his parents sent him to a military-style school.

Trump went on to college first at Fordham University in New York, and then at the University of Pennsylvania. He

earned a degree in economics. He was also already investing in real estate. After he graduated, Trump quickly returned

to New York City and his career.

In time, he became the head of the family business. He re-named it the Trump Organization. As its president,

Trump developed and put his name on luxury buildings, casinos, hotels, and golf courses around the world. Later, he

became linked to the entertainment industry, too. He became a part owner of beauty pageants, hosted a television show,

and wrote a book about how to succeed in business.

During these years, Trump also married three times and divorced twice. The media wrote especially about his first

and second marriages because he openly had a relationship with his second wife while he was married to his first. In

2005, he married Melania Knauss, a former model from Slovenia. She is only the second first lady who was not born in

the United States. The first was Louisa Adams, who came from Britain in 1801.

But, until he officially entered the 2016 campaign as a Republican candidate, few linked him to politics.

Trump is unusual among past presidents because he had never worked in the government before. Nor has Trump

served in the military. Only Presidents Taylor, Grant, and Eisenhower had no previous government experience;

however, they had all been generals.

Trump is the oldest person ever to take office. He was 70 years old when he was sworn in.

He is also one of the richest.

And Trump is unusual in how he communicates with the public. As president, he continues to use Twitter to

communicate his thoughts directly to anyone who wants to follow him.

While the long-term effects of Trump's presidency are not yet known, he will likely be remembered in part for his

direct and unscripted style of communication.

A woman from Australia has found the world’s oldest known message in a bottle nearly 132 years after it

22.(8分)

was cast into the sea.

Tonya Illman discovered the drift (

漂流

) bottle half-buried in the sand on a beach in Western Australia, 180

kilometers north of the state capital Perth.

The message, dated 12 June 1886, was thrown into the Indian Ocean from the German ship Paula, which was en

route from Cardiff, Wales, to its destination of Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The bottle was one of the thousands

thrown into oceans as part of a 69-year-long German experiment on global currents (

洋流

) to find faster shipping

routes.

Until now, the previous world record for the oldest message in a bottle was 108 years, 4 months and 18 days from

the time it was cast until its discovery.

Illman found the bottle near her son’s car in the beach’s soft sand.

“I was walking across when I saw something sticking out of the sand, so I went to take a closer look,” Illman was

quoted as saying.

“It just looked like a lovely old bottle, so I picked it up thinking it might look good in my bookcase. My son’s

girlfriend was the one who discovered the note when she went to tip the sand out.

“The note was damp, rolled tightly and tied with a string. We took it home and dried it out, and when we opened it,

we saw it was in German, with very faint German handwriting on it.”

The Illmans took their find to the local museum which established that the bottle was a 19th Century Dutch gin

bottle, and the German ship Paula sailed from Cardiff to Makassar (Indonesia) in 1886.

I can hear the sound of insects and feel autumn is nearing. This means my year of study at Nara

University of Education is coming to an end.

The time I've spent here has flown by so quickly. It seems as if I came here a month ago

but in reality I have to go

home soon. When I came here

I missed my family and friends back home and found it hard to overcome loneliness

but

on the other hand

I was interested in the new environment and had a lot of fun.

I had visited Japan three times before coming to study at this university

but when I started living in Japan

many

days were filled with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. I sometimes made silly mistakes

but I thought this was the

best way to learn about Japanese culture. I was not the only one that was not accustomed to the different customs of

Japanese people.

My plan before coming to Japan was to make friends with some Japanese students in universities. However

I

found my best friends were those who came from other countries. I didn't know much about other countries but I came

to be more interested in them through making friends from different places

which made me aware of many different

and sometimes hard-to-understand customs. Furthermore

I was surprised to see myself thinking more about my own

culture and realized I should come to know it better.

I am really happy that I came to Nara. During my stay

I felt the closer connection between humans and nature

here than in Europe.

1

What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A

The author felt puzzled all the time.

B

The author is adjusted to the life.

C

Many foreigners live in the city of Nara.

D

Many students like the author felt anxious.

2

What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A

Different countries.

B

Different cultures.

C

Many different places.

D

Foreign students.

3

What do we know about the Japanese according to the text?

A

They value their lives much more.

B

They are difficult to get along with.

C

They are mindful of protecting the environment.

D

Many Europeans love to make friends with them.

4

What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A

To look back on his study.

B

To call on readers to visit Nara.

C

To show the beauty of Japanese culture.

D

To share his experience of studying abroad.

A team of international scientists is due to set off for the world’s biggest iceberg in a mission aiming

to answer fundamental questions about the impact of climate change in the polar regions. The scientists, led by he

British Antarctic Survey( BAS), are trying to reach a newly revealed ecosystem that had been hidden for 120,000 years

below the Larsen C ice shelf.

Last year, part of the Larsen C ice shelf calved (

崩解

) away, forming a huge iceberg-A68--which is four times bigger

than London, and revealing life beneath for the first time. Now scientists say it is a race against time to explore these

new ecosystems before they are transformed to the light. Marine biologist Dr Katrin Linse from the BAS is leading the

mission.

“The calving of A68 provides us with a unique opportunity to study marine life as it responds to a huge

environment change,” she said. “It is important that we get there quickly before the undersea environment changes as

sunlight enters the water.”

Professor David Vaughan, science director at the BAs, said, “We need to be bold (

大胆的

) on this one. Larsen C is a

long way south and there’s lots of sea ice in the area, but this is important science, so we will try our best to get the team

where they need to be. He said climate change had already affected the sea around Antarctica and is warming some

coastal waters. “Future warming may make some habitats warm. Where these habitats support unique species that are

adapted to love the cold and not the warm, those species are going to either move or die.”

There is growing concern about the possible impact of climate change in the Antarctic. Earlier this month, a report

revealed that melting ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are speeding up the already fast pace of the sea level rise.

The research, published by the

National Academies of Science

,

Engineering and Medicine

, said, “At the current rate, the

world’s ocean will be, on average, at least 60cm higher by the end of the century.” However, it found that the process is

accelerating, and more than three quarters of the acceleration since 1993 is due to melting ice sheets in Greenland and

Antarctica, the study shows.

1

Why are the scientists eager to go to the iceberg?

A

To study how the iceberg was formed.

B

To study a newly discovered ecosystem.

C

To explore a new way to prevent climate change.

D

To explore the geography of the Larsen C ice shelf.

2

What do the underlined words “this one” in the fourth paragraph refer to?

A

The Larsen C ice shelf.

B

Climate change in Antarctica.

C

The A68 iceberg with the ecosystem beneath it.

D

The condition of animal species in Antarctica.

3

What can we learn about the A68 iceberg from the text?

A

It is as big as London.

B

It is part of an ice shelf in the Arctic.

C

It will disappear in a very short time.

D

It has uncovered an unknown ecosystem in Antarctica.

4

What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A

There is no need to worry about climate change in Antarctica.

B

The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at a steady rate.
