prep. 不中（目标），不对（题），与…无关；（表示排斥）除…之外；（表示位置）
在…旁边，，在…一侧，在…附近；（表示关系）与…无关，和…相比，比起…来，比得上
adv. 〈古〉同“besides”；
beside的用法
一、介词 beside 作“在…旁边”讲；可引申为“比起来”、“和…无关”等。
Many automobiles are running on the road beside the river. 许多汽车在河旁的
路上奔驰。
We stand (或 sit, lie) beside. 我们站（或坐、躺）在某人身旁。

Beside this beeper that one is seen to be much better. 和这个传呼机相比，就可
看出那个寻呼机好得多。
She is beside herself with excitement (或 joy, grief, anger). 她极度激动（或高兴、
痛苦、生气）。[由“她由于激动…等身不由己（因身旁已是身外→她失去对自己感情的控
制）”引申过来。]
Their discussion is beside the question. 他们的讨论离题了。（直译是“…与该问
题无关”。）
二、介词 besides 作“除…以外，还”讲
Besides the electrons, an atom also contains positive electrical particles. 除了
电子以外，原子还含有带正电的粒子。
This morning he had nothing to do besides answering letters. 今天上午他除了
写信外，没事可做。（answering letters 为动名词短语，作介词宾语。）
Besides knowing much about music, she sings very well. 除了懂音乐以外，她还
唱得很好。
Besides that he drove the car, he repaired it on the way to Beijing. 他不仅驾驶
了这辆车，而且在赴京途中还对它进行了修理。（介词 besides 后由连词 that 引出介词
宾语从句。）
三、副词 besides 作“此外”、“加之”、“况且”等讲

The second-hand car he bought was almost new; besides, it was in excellent
condition. 他买的那辆二手车几乎是新的，而且运行状况极佳。
Besides, the diseases brought by those people had reached epidemic
proportions. 此外，当时那些人带来的疾病已达到流行病程度。
四、几个注意点
I. beside 一般只作介词用，而 besides 可作介词或副词用。两词虽相差一个 s，但
须注意词义差别大。详见上述第一～三项。
II. 介词 besides 和 except 在汉语里都译为“除……以外”，但含义有差别。
All went to Beijing last year except Joe. 除了乔以外，去年谁都去过北京了。（意
指“乔没去北京”。）
All of them went to Beijing last year besides Joe. 除了乔以外，去年他们也都去过
北京了。（意指“乔去了北京”。）
本专题第二项中的四个例句中的 besides 用法也与上相同，没有把 besides 后面的
人或物作为“除外”来看待，而是“也包括了进去”。主句没有 also 等词出现，在译文
中加译“也”、“还”为妥，以免误解。
若 besides… 与否定句连用，则表示“除…外不再有…”之意，可与 except 互换：
There is nothing on the table besides (或 except ) a floppy disk. 桌上只有一个软盘。

2. I found a place to park beside a station wagon.

them.
