Java Python ARCH716 - Climatic Design for Sustainable Architecture - Module Description

Aims

The aims of this module are to:

(i) to develop a good understanding of the climate-related data and techniques that are relevant for the sustainable environmental design of buildings

(ii) to demonstrate how such designs should be carried out in a climate sensitive manner

(iii) to explain the role and importance of the microclimate between buildings

(iv) to enable students to select and use appropriate analytical tools and methodologies that can be integrated to show a holistic approach to climate sensitive design that considers climate, sustainable design, choice of materials, energy use and landscape

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should have developed the skills and understanding necessary to successfully undertake the following tasks:

(i) the design of buildings and their surroundings optimised with respect to climate, environmental and energy issues

(ii) the acquisition and subsequent analysis of climate information and data in a way that informs design decisions in a successful and appropriate manner

(iii) the appraisal of building schemes from a holistic environmental design point of view and the use of a variety of relevant environmental assessment techniques to analyse critically proposed and built design solutions

The module consists of lectures and interactive tutorials with exercises undertaken by the students. Students are expected to take an active part in the discussions and to present responses to assigned work in a variety of formats –written, oral and visual.
