Videoconferencing is nothing more than a television set or PC monitor with a camera. Through

the videoconferencing, not only your voice but also your face, the surroundings and any other

with or without wires. Of course, when you go into the details, the technology involved is very 2

and the subject matter littered with jargon. Such as ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network),

POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) or the 3 behind bandwidth, latency and isochrony

Good people communication is 4 in any business, and the more interaction you can achieve,

the more likely it is that your 5 will be the right ones. Videoconferencing not only allows

Passage 1

Someday a siranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you’ve

visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone

bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you

without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or

a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen --- the 21

st

century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends,

family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread

crumbs ( ) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you

are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or

not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is : Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it.

A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying

they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any

behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths ( )

to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down

supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that

reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their

hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon ( ) .

But privacy does matter--- at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t

notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.

1. What does the author mean by saying “ the 21

st

century equivalent of being caught naked”

3. Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret” (Line 5,

Para. 3)?

D. Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.

4. What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?

Passage 2

Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not

matter. They will turn themselves off--- and on again when you return. You will choose the

temperature for each room , the lighting and the humidity. A sensor will detect the presence of a

human (and, with lich, ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave, it

will turn them off again.

The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than

just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, plugs

or switches, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair.

They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the faire brigade. It

will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. This will not be very difficult

because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You’ll open them using your personal

card--- the one you use for shopping--- maybe using a number known only to you.

It will be impossible to lose the key, and a house breaker will have to tamper( ) with the lock or

with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer.

The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman-servant. It will be an entertainer, and

most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040

“entertainment” will mean much more. For on e thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather

than just waiting.

6. The author intends to tell us that in 2040 _________.
