rice It is said that Qin Shi Huang, the founder of the Qin Dynasty

(221BC-206BC), took his army to southern China to unify southern

China. However, the soldiers are from northern China and got used

to eating wheat. They could not adapt to eating rice and couldn't

digest it. In order to solve this problem, the chef had the idea to

combine rice with wheat. The chef smashed the rice into rice dough

and steamed it, and then pulled them into noodles. The noodles

cured the soldiers' digestive problems. The soldiers regained their

energy after eating the rice noodles, and finally unified southern

China, according to reports.

idea to make rice into a pancake, and filled it with meat and

vegetables. By doing this, her husband could eat food from an

entire meal in one roll, which was very convenient and nourishing.

(1644-1911), smelled the scent of ham when he passed by Hu's

house and decided to visit him. Hu treated Zuo with ham and added

Karachi is a city in Pakistan. It is one of the hottest

places on Earth. In 2015, more than 1,000 people died

there during a heat wave. “It was a very terrible time,”

Shahzad Qureshi told us. “We needed to do something

about it.”

Qureshi took action. He started a group called Urban

Forest. It plants trees in cities across Pakistan. Trees

provide shade. They help cool the air. This is especially helpful in cities, where roads

and buildings hold in the heat.

For its first project, Urban Forest planted about 1,300 trees in a park in Karachi.

The group uses a special method that helps the trees grow quickly. Qureshi hopes the

park will one day become a forest of 50,000 trees.

Helping the Earth

Since 2015, Qureshi and his team have planted eight urban forests in Pakistan.

Six are in Karachi. The trees also provide a habitat for birds, insects, and other

creatures. Some trees grow fruit for people and animals to eat.

In 2017, Qureshi helped plant an urban forest at Karachi Grammar School. First,

he met with students to teach them how trees help the environment. Then students

planted saplings in the schoolyard. The trees attract birds and colorful butterflies.

Students go outside during science class to study the forest. “It’s like a library

of native trees in front of the kids,” says Qureshi. “It’s a beautiful thing to see.”

The Power of Trees

Trees are powerful plants. They can help lower summer temperatures in cities by

2° to 9°F. That’s according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. How do they

do it? Trees make shade. Air temperatures are cooler in the shade. And trees release

water through their leaves. This helps cool the air, too.

1. We know that Karachi is a place on Earth from the passage.

A. cold

B. hot

C. wet

D. dry

2. What does the group Urban Forest do?

A. It raises money for poor students across Pakistan.

马云卸任:走出半生,归来仍是老师

All eyes were on Jack Ma. The chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd stepped

down on Teachers’ Day from leading the e-commerce giant he founded 20 years ago.

“I still have lots of dreams to go after,” Ma wrote in an open letter last year to

announce his parting. “The world is big, and I am still young, so I want to try new

things.”

The 55-year-old businessman showed that he was ready for new things by

arriving at his farewell party dressed up like a rock star.

In fact, his rags-to-riches(白手起家的) story is a good example of doing

something different. Visiting the United States in 1995, Ma saw the Internet and had

the idea of setting up his own trading website. In 1999, he founded Alibaba with a

group of friends in a shared apartment, struggling for years to get it off the ground.

With all the challenges, the company slowly brought e-commerce to China.

Although his success has inspired a number of Chinese tech businessmen, Ma

pointed out that the key is having a dream. “It’s the dreams that keep us never afraid

of setbacks(挫折),” Ma said in a video posted on Sept. 9.

Now the experienced businessman is looking to focus on education. What can he

offer?

“I’m not gonna teach English; I’m not gonna teach business. But I’m gonna

teach young people how to face challenges,” he told Bloomberg News.

Skilled sailors were never made on calm waters. As Ma said, “Today is cruel.

Tomorrow is crueler. But the day after tomorrow is beautiful.”
