Unit 1

Some new students of Blue Sky College want to learn more about college life. They are now talking with Mrs Brown, their counsellor.

Mrs Brown: I know you all have questions about college life. Just ask, and I'll try my best to answer.

Catherine: Mrs Brown, what's the major difference between high school and college?

Mrs Brown: Independence. As college students, you will have

a lot of freedom. That means you must mainly rely on yourselves and make your own decisions. On the other hand, you

must be responsible for everything you do

Steven: I heard that the library is very important for college students. Is that true?

Mrs Brown: Sure. Reading in the library is an important part of college life. You should make full use of the library.

Linda: How about campus activities?

Mrs Brown: There are many interesting activities on campus.

They are organised by different student clubs. If interested, you can join them. It's a good way to improve communication skills, to make friends and to enjoy your hobbies.

Peter: This is my first time to share a room with strangers. I feel a little bit uncomfortable. What should I do?

Mrs Brown: Good question. First, don't see your roommates as strangers. They'll probably become your lifelong friends. Second, respect privacy—don't use their belongings without permission. Of course, you can speak frankly about your habits. Communicate often and you'll get along well with one another.

Unit 4

Nancy: When I was a little girl, I started saving up loose change to donate to charity organisations. Those dimes, quarters and dollars began to add up quickly. So far, I've given over $1,800 to help orphans at a school. My loose change has really helped those in need.

Karl: I'm a vocational college student majoring in marketing. I once volunteered with a local nonprofit organisation at

their fundraising event. We held an outdoor fair. I helped

by designing a poster, decorating tables and doing a survey. In this way, I learned a lot about marketing while helping others.

Volunteer work is becoming a fashion in modern society. More and more people are willing to offer help to others. Volunteers often say that they are able to learn a lot from the people they help.

Volunteering can not only do favour to others, but also bring benefits to yourself. Doing good for others and the comm

unity provides a natural sense of success and pride. Also,

volunteering gives you the opportunity to practise and develop your social skills. It can help you get experience in your area of interest or give you the opportunity to practise important skills you may use in your future workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, etc.

Whatever talent you have, you may always find volunteer opportunities available, such as singing for residents at a nursing home, helping repair the furniture of an SOS Village, tutoring children who have trouble learning how to read and

write, or just playing with children at an orphanage.

The more volunteer work you do, the more you'll know about yourself and the value of volunteer work to you. Offer your help when you are needed and you may find volunteer work an unforgettable life experience.

Unit 2

To make your college life more enjoyable, you need to make new friends to hang out and study with. To start college friendships, you can consider the following ways.

To begin with, the courses you choose may bring you some new friends. When you take classes that interest you, you may find people with similar interests. This means you have something in common. Once you get to know one another better, hopefully you will find some study partners.

Another way to make friends is to join campus clubs. No matter what clubs you join, you can meet a lot of new people. Get involved in activities you love, and you will find

people with similar hobbies around you.

Playing sports may bring happy surprises, too. Students often have a passion for sports. If you get involved in a sport at college, for good health or for fun, you can meet new friends and find someone to play together with.

Getting a part-time job may open another door for new friendships. When working with others, you often need to communicate with them. This gives you a lot of opportunities to make new friends.

In short, there are many ways to make friends at college.

If you take an active part in campus and social activities, you may not only broaden your horizons, but also create opportunities for new friendships.

Unit 3

Jack is now in trouble. It is only the middle of the term, but he has spent almost all his money. What can he do? Call home? Father would get furious. Borrow from classmates No way! Because many of them are short of money, too. To solve the problem, students like Jack need to learn the

lesson of budgeting.

The first thing is to make a spending plan and see where

to cut costs. Choose what you need most, instead of what you want most, when deciding what to buy. Stick to your plan when it seems everyone else has or does something. There are almost always inexpensive alternatives for your wants.

Remember you can have it all, just not all at once.

What's more, you may go broke if you always want to keep

up with the Joneses. There's no need to give in to peer pressure if you don't have the money for entertainment. Tell them it's not within your budget! Try to find other ways to get into social groups, like ballgames, a picnic or a bike tour with classmates. If you really need more money

to live in reasonable comfort, get a part-time job and save a little. In this way, you won't regret missing out on the best part of college by following too strict a budget.

Remember, you go to college to prepare yourself for your future. So, why not develop good habits now? By learning to

budget, you will feel more confident about your ability to

take responsibility for yourself, and become the master of your own life.
