Course description

By providing original English articles published in various kinds of newspapers

and magazines, the course is to help the learners be familiar with the cultural

background in English-speaking countries This course also acquaints students with

different styles and characteristics of the English articles. As a result, students are able

to analyze the ideas, structures and language techniques of the articles dealing with

finance, economics, and world politics.

The New York Times(纽约时报)

The New York Times is an American daily newspaper founded in 1851 and

published in New York City. The largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States.

The Times is owned by The New York Times Company, which publishes eighteen

other newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune and The Boston Globe.

The company's chairman is Sulzberger , whose family has controlled the paper since

1896.

The paper's motto, as printed in the upper left-hand corner of the front page, is

"All the News That's Fit to Print." It is organized into sections: News, Opinions,

eight-column format for several years after most papers switched to six columns, and

along with The New York Times, which is known for its general reporting and

reporting. The Post has distinguished itself through its political reporting on the

workings of the White House, Congress, and other aspects of the U.S. government.

The Los Angeles Times is a daily newspaper published in Los Angeles,

California since 1881. It is distributed throughout the Western United States. It is the

second-largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States and the fourth-most

widely distributed newspaper in the United States. Its daily circulation reported in

October 2008 was 739,000, down from a peak of 1.1 million.

USA Today is a national American daily newspaper published by the Gannett

Company. The paper has the widest circulation of any newspaper in the United States

(averaging over 2.25 million copies every weekday). USA Today is distributed in

The Wall Street Journal(华尔街日报)

The Wall Street Journal is an English-language international daily newspaper

published by Dow Jones & Company, a division of News Corporation, in New York

City, with Asian and European editions. It was the largest-circulation newspaper in

the United States until November 2003, when it was surpassed by USA Today. It

would later regain its number one position in the United States in October of 2009.

The Journal newspaper primarily covers U.S. and international business and

financial news and issues—the paper's name comes from Wall Street, the street in

New York City that is the heart of the financial district. It has been printed

continuously since being founded on July 8, 1889.

The Christian Science Monitor(基督教科学箴言报)

The Christian Science Monitor (CSM) is an international newspaper published

daily online, Monday through Friday, and weekly in print. It was started in 1908 by

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist. As of March 31,

2008, the print circulation was 56,083.

The CSM is a newspaper that covers international and United States current

events. The paper includes a daily religious feature on the "The Home Forum" page,

but is not a platform for evangelizing.
