Colors in Chinese Culture

Hi, my name is Lin Lin and I'm going to tell you all about the

special meanings of colors in Chinese culture! In China, we

believe that different colors represent different things. Isn't that

cool? Let me explain what some of the most important colors

mean.

Red

Let's start with red since it's probably the most famous

Chinese color. Red is considered a very lucky color that

symbolizes happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. That's why

you'll see red everywhere during Chinese New Year! We decorate

with red lanterns, red couplets on the doors, and give out little

red envelopes filled with money. The bright red color is

supposed to scare away any evil spirits and bring blessings for

the new year.

During weddings, the bride will usually wear a red dress or

have red in her outfit somewhere. Red represents love and

commitment between the couple, as well as fertility and the

hope for a good marriage filled with kids someday. It's a lucky,

joyful color.

But red doesn't just represent luck and happiness. It can also

symbolize valor, courage, and respect, especially in politics and

the military. That's why you'll see red pretty much everywhere -

on the Chinese flag, on badges and emblems, and worn by

officialgoverment workers. Red is just an overall powerful,

energetic color in our culture.

Yellow

Another significant color is yellow. In China, yellow is

considered the most noble and pure color. It represents royalty,

power, and freedom from worldly cares.

A long time ago, only the emperor was allowed to wear

yellow robes and live in the yellow imperial palaces. Things like

yellow roof tiles and decorations in the imperial buildings were

reserved for the emperor too. Yellow symbolized his supreme

authority over all of China.

Even today, you'll notice that a lot of important buildings

have a yellow glaze on the roof tiles or yellow accents on the
