一、在科技英语写作中，常需要表示某一项工作的历史意义，或特殊意义，这里一般不表达为historical significance、particular significance。

在科学研究活动中，我们用interest 而不是significance 表达“意义”。科学研究本质上是满足人们的好奇心，而不是对我们有什么重要性（significance 的意思是重要性）。所以“历史意义/特殊意义”应该是historical interest、particular interest。

此外，表达一项研究工作有意义（值得做），也是interesting——能够引起人们的兴趣。

二、具有历史意义、具有特殊意义：be of historical interest、be of particular interest，例如：

DFT and it’s fast algorithm FFT are of great historical interest. Its importance can never be overestimated.（离散傅立叶变换和快速算法FFT具有伟大的历史意义，其重要性永远不会被高估。）

In 90s, Yunn LeCun successfully achieved recognition of handwriting numbers using CNN. This breakthrough is of historical interest. （杨立昆在上世纪九十年代利用卷积神经网络实现手写数字识别，这个突破具有历史意义。）

Diffie-Hellman key agreement is of historical/particular interest in modern information security. （Diffie Hellman密钥协商对现代信息安全具有历史/特殊意义。）

be of historical interest 评价很高，不要轻易对某项工作这么评价，be of particular interest 可以对比较引人关注的工作做这样的评价。

Logistic regression is of particular interest for machine learning.（逻辑回归对机器学习具有特殊意义。）

The authors’ work seems to be of particular interest for improving performance of the search algorithm.（作者的工作对改进搜索算法的性能有特殊意义。）

三、拓展一下。在科技论文写作中常表达某一个idea有意义但与本文无关，表达方式为：be of independent interest （具有独立意义）。例如：

Deploying multiple servers will improve performance of the system. But it’s of independent interest. （布置多服务器可以提高系统性能，但超出了我们工作的范围beyond the scope of our consideration ）
