第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Mrs. Jones was my first patient when I started medical school—and I owe

21.(6分)her a lot.

She was under my care for the first two years of my medical training, yet I knew

very little about her, except that she was thin, perhaps in her mid 70s. It might seem

rather negligent not to know the basic facts of my patient, but I had a valid

reason—Mrs. Jones was dead, and had been dead for about three years before I made a

patient of her. Mrs. Jones was the dead body that I dissected(解剖)over the first two

years of my medical training.

Of course, her name wasn’t really Mrs. Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be

conducting research into someone’s body without even knowing its name, so out of

courtesy, I thought she should have one. “Me and Mrs. Jones, we’ve got a thing going

on,” went the song coming out of the radio as I unzipped the bag of her on my first day

— and so she was christened.

As the months passed, I soon forgot that Mrs. Jones had, in fact, once been alive.

One day, though, she suddenly became very human again. I’d been dissecting Mrs.

Jones a good 18 months before I got around to the uterus(子宫). After I’d removed it,

the professor came up to me, “If you look at the opening carefully, you’ll see that the

angle indicates that this woman has had several children, probably three.” I stared at it,

and I suddenly felt very strange. This woman, who had given me something incredibly

precious that I’d begun to take for granted, wasn’t a dead body. She was a person, a

mother, in fact.

At my graduation, the same professor came over to congratulate me. I explained

the story about Mrs. Jones to him, and recalled what he’d told me about her having

children and how that had affected me all those years ago.

“Well,” he said, “at the beginning of your training you had a dead body and

managed to turn it into a person. Now you’re a doctor, the trick is to have a person and

not turn them into a dead body,” and he laughed, shook my hand and walked away.

1、Why didn’t the author know much about Mrs. Jones?

A.Because he was irresponsible for his patients.

B.Because he wasn’t allowed to ask for her privacy.

C.Because he didn’t know her until she passed away.

D.Because he was too careless while dissecting her.

2、How did Mrs. Jones get her name?

A.It was passed down from the seniors of my school.

B.It came from a song being played when we first met.

C.She was named after a well-known singer I liked best.

D.It just occurred to me when I opened the bag of her.

3、What could be the author’s feeling for Mrs. Jones now?

A.Grateful. B.Pitiless.

C.Hateful. D.Guilty.

4、What did the professor imply by his words in the last paragraph?

A.Medical students are able to bring the dead back to life.

B.Being a doctor has nothing to do with the medical training.

C.Good doctors never fail to save their patients from dying.

D.Medical staff ought to have respect for life and humanity.

22.(8分)Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an

older person company and help them remember to take their medicine. That is the

shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence,

Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-nillion-dollar award from the National

Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial

intelligence, or A.I., to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.

The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced over 1000 dollars, it

sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for older people. Now the project

is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers at Brown’s

Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative are working to decide which activities older

adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of

activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the person

to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few

hundred dollars.

It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr

lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia(痴呆). The boy for All cat that

Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr

and keeps her calm while Eliot is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother

to remember to take her medicine and be careful when he walks would be greater.

The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful

activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat,

however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way

to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange

between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By

doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and

sadness among elderly people.

1、What’s the purpose of the project?

A.To relieve the pain of the elderly. B.To promote the sales of a medicine.

C.To help make the robotic cat smarter. D.To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.

2、Compared with the old model, the new robotic cat will be ________.

A.cheaper B.smaller

C.more talkative D.more expensive

3、What does Paragraph 3 intend to tell us?

A.The more functions of the cat, the better. B.The cat gives much help to the

elderly.

C.There is no cure for dementia at present. D.Mary Derr would have died without

the cat.

4、What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The feeling of being needed is vital to the elderly.

B.Each family can afford such a cat in the future.

C.A talking cat is quite popular among the elderly.

D.Feelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.

23.(8分)China’s cancer researcher Zhu Chen, together with two French

researchers Anne Dejean and Hugues de The, received Sjoberg Prize 2018 in Stockholm

Concert Hall, Sweden on Friday.

“We used wisdom from both Chinese and Western medicine and offered a cure to

one of the most deadly cancers, ” Chen told Xinhua, “I feel that Chinese medicine has

potential to contribute more to human health. There are no borders in medicine,

because it struggles for benefiting all mankind. It’s a language of peace, and of

development and progress.” Chen recalled the cooperation with the two French

researchers for over 30 years.

This year’s Sjoberg winners have developed a new and targeted treatment for a

specific form of blood cancer called acute promyelocytic leukaemia(急性早幼粒白血病).

It was once one of the deadliest forms of cancer, but it is now possible to cure nine out of

ten patients who receive the new treatment. The winners have made this revolutionary

development possible by methodically mapping the molecular mechanisms responsible

for the disease.

The prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is funded(资助) by the Sjoberg Foundation. The foundation, with a donation of 2.5 billion US dollars,

was founded in 2016, and serves to promote scientific research that focuses on cancer,

health and the environment.

The prize is an annual international prize in cancer research awarded to individual

researchers or research groups. The prize amounts to one million US dollars, of which

100,000 US dollars is the prize sum and 900,000 US dollars is funding for future

research.

24.(8分)I visited Copenhagen for the first time last Easter. As a student,I’m

always strapped for cash,so I assumed I could only afford to breathe the air — but

luckily everything about Copenhagen is breathtaking.

I was staying in an Airbnb, and rented a bike so I could cover more ground. One of

the first places I visited was the Rundetaarn, or “round tower” built in the 17th century

as an astronomical observatory. It has an equestrian staircase (a wide set of stairs big

enough for horses to use) that went on and on. As I was going up, I stopped to visit the

tower’s library hall. At the top, there’s a glass platform that gives a view 80-foot straight

down, as well as a bell loft. Luckily, the views over Copenhagen from the top were well

worth the climb.

After coming down, I hiked up to the Kastellet Fortress to see the famous Little

Mermaid statue. Taking a photo with her was almost impossible with all the tourists

crowding around—but sitting there and hearing the lapping waves of the deep blue

Baltic Sea, waiting for the sun to set, was an unforgettable and calming experience.

The next day, I visited the Glyptotek art museum, exploring the grand exhibits. I

looked into the marble eyes of many Roman gods, and walked down dimly lit staircases

to see mummies from Egypt.

Before I unwillingly boarded the train back to the airport, I told myself that I must

visit again—to experience the thrills of Tivoli Gardens, try more of the street food and

everything else from this amazing city.

1、Why did the author rent a bike?

A.Because she loved to ride a bike.

B.Because she didn’t afford to rent a car.

C.Because she found nowhere to rent other vehicles.

D.Because she wanted to see as many attractions as possible.

2、What did the author find difficult at the Kastellet Fortress?

A.Finding a sitting place.

B.Waiting for the sun to set.

C.Listening to the sound of waves.

D.Having a photo taken with a statue.

3、Which of the following didn’t the author visit?

A.Rundetaarn. B.Tivoli Gardens.

C.Glyptotek art museum. D.Little Mermaid Statue.

4、What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To remember a holiday.

B.To introduce a new attraction.

C.To share her travel experience.

D.To show her love of Copenhagen.

25.(10分) When you think back to the blackboard from your school days,

what color is it? Chances are that it's green. So what's up with the name? Originally,

blackboards were really black. Before wall-sized blackboards existed, late 18th-century

students used their own mini boards made of slate(石板)or painted wood, according to

Concordia University, Those first boards were, in fact. black, and they paved the way

for the larger ones.

In 1800 when a Scottish headmaster named James Pillans wanted his students to

draw maps, the students couldn't draw the maps their teacher wanted on their tiny

boards, so Pillans put several slates together to create a large board. Problem solved!

From there, the idea spread quickly as teachers could finally show a concept to the

whole class at one time. By 1815, the massive writing spaces were common enough to

earn their own name: blackboard.

The color change came in the 1960s when companies sold, steel plates, coated with

green enamel(漆) instead of the traditional dark slate. The new material was lighter and

less fragile than the first blackboards, so they were cheaper to ship and more likely to

survive the journey. Teachers weren't complaining either. After all, the new

“greenboards”made the chalk powder easier to erase. Plus, the enamel left less of a glare

and the color was nicer to look at. At that point, people started using the word

“chalkboard ”as a more accurate descriptor, but “ blackboard” still stuck around.

1、What did the late 18th-century students use in class?

A.Blackboard.

C.Greenboard

B.Chalkboard

D.Mini board.

2、Why did the headmaster ask the students to put their mini boards together?

A.To make a comparison.

C.To draw students’ attention

B.To make enough space

D.To arouse students’ interest

3、Which of the following is NOT the advantage of the“greenboard”?

A.They're lighter in weight.

C.They’re easier to erase the powder.

traditional ones

4、What's the main idea of the text?

D.They’re more useful than the

A.Introduction of the blackboard

C.Color of the blackboard.

B.Origin of the blackboard.

D.Function of the blackboard.

29、Possible Version 1

Dear Jim,

I’m very pleased to know from your e-mail you’re coming to travel in China.

As for which city to visit, I guess Beijing is the best choice. To begin with, as a

capital city, Beijing is not only the political and culture centre but also scientific and

educational heart, from which you can have a general understanding of China. What’s

more, the ancient and modern city will provide you with its rich and varied history and

scenery.

I recommend you travel by subway. For one thing, it’s convenient to travel by

subway around Beijing. For another, you can avoid traffic jam and travel environment

friendly.

I’m looking forward to your coming!

Yours

Li Hua.

Possible Version 2

Dear Jim,

I’m more than delighted to read that you’re to tour a city in China during the

coming winter holiday.

At your request in the email, I recommend that you visit Beijing based on the

following: Firstly, Beijing is definitely the city to learn about China's brilliant history

and culture, where you can view most wonderful attractions and historic wonders, such

as the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Beijing is a significant

city to view Chinese development because economic growth has accelerated the pace

and scale of change and outfitted the city with a sense of modernity. Secondly, this city

offers an endless mixture of places for your entertainment. Thirdly, people here are very

hospitable. Last but not least, with a greatly improved transport system, Beijing offers

many optional vehicles both for locals and visitors. To make your Beijing tour more

comfortable and for your convenience, I advise you to get around or out of the city by

subway to avoid traffic jams at peak times.

Hopefully my suggestions will be of some help to you and wish you enjoy your

stay!

Yours,

Li Hua
