ONCE there was a boy. He was, let us say, something like fourteen years old;

long and loose jointed and towheaded. He wasn't good for much, that boy. His

chief delight was to eat and sleep, and after that he liked best to make mischief.

Tony妈妈读到英文后，总觉得 long and loose jointed，有点单薄瘦高之外的含义，

应该是很符合这个男孩精气神的一种含义，可是我get不到。于是就去群里讨论了这个问

题，一个同学说“用这个词形容人是不是就是汉语里站没长相坐没坐相”，感觉靠谱。

“所以是带有语气色彩的，不是单出说他又高又瘦”，美国的同学问了她家的活字典“听

来是是lanky的意思，想象一个十几岁的少年，手脚长得很长不合比例，不是很优雅的那

种感觉”，并且又给出了典籍论据“这是1846年那本书的用法：The barber himself

was a long，low-jointed，ill-put together sort of fellow”。听到这里，必须鼓掌，

“太形象了，ill-put together”。

“ill-put-together 啥意思？” “没put-together well的意思吧”“哈哈”。那么中

文哪个词比较贴切呢“松松垮垮，懒散不精神”。

还是美国的同学got到正确答案“吊儿郎当”。想一下，尼尔斯可不就是这么一个孩

子吗。看后面的描述 He wasn't good for much, that boy. His chief delight was to eat

and sleep, and after that he liked best to make mischief.

人长得吊儿郎当，做事情就是“不务正业” ：）

anybody's meddling interference," he said to himself.

But it was almost as if father should have guessed the boy's thoughts, for just
