Call for Library Volunteers!

Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grader at Elm Tree

Elementary School. I love spending time at our school library

because there are so many cool books to read and fun activities

to do. But did you know our library needs help from volunteers?

Let me tell you all about it!

Our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Roberts, does an amazing job

taking care of the library. She helps us find books, reads stories

during storytime, and teaches us fun facts about authors and

books. However, there is just one Mrs. Roberts and she has a lot

to do! That's where volunteers come in to lend a hand.

Volunteers at our library get to do all sorts of awesome jobs.

One important task is re-shelving books after students have

returned them. I'm sure we've all had times when we can't find

the book we want because it's been misshelved. Volunteers

make sure every book is in its proper place so we can easily

locate what we need.

Another big job for volunteers is helping to prepare for and

run the library's special events. Like what, you may ask? Well, we

have cool activities like the Summer Reading Challenge, the

Spooky Stories Night before Halloween, and even an Authors'

Tea Party where we get to meet writers! Volunteers decorate, set

up, and assist during these fun happenings.

Volunteering also allows students to have leadership roles in

the library. We have Library Ambassadors who give tours of the

library to new students and teach them all about the different

sections. There are also Student Shelvers who get to re-shelve

books during free periods or after school. It's a hands-on way to

learn organizational skills.

But why volunteer, you might wonder? Well, as Mrs. Roberts

always says, "Volunteers are the heart of the library!" Without

generous people donating their time, so many of the things that

make our library great couldn't happen.

Volunteering also looks super impressive on college

applications and job resumes down the road. It shows you are a

hard worker who cares about contributing to the community.

Plus, it's a fun way to spend your free time!

For me personally, one of the best parts about volunteering

is getting to spend more time surrounded by all the wonderful

books. I love reading adventure stories and fantasies about

magic worlds. Volunteering has allowed me to learn about so

many new book series I may have never discovered otherwise.

My favorite volunteer duty is helping out during storytime

for the younger kids. I'll never forget the looks of pure joy and

amazement on their little faces as I act out scenes from the

books using different voices and props. StorytimeVolunteering

has really helped me improve my public speaking too!

So what does it take to become a library volunteer? Luckily,

the requirements are simple:

Be responsible and hard-working

Love books and reading

Want to help make our library the best it can be!

That's really it! No prior experience is required, though

strong organizational skills are definitely a plus. Volunteering fits

into any schedule since you can sign up for just an hour here and

there or make it a weekly commitment.

Mrs. Roberts provides all the training volunteers need, going

over things like how to properly shelve books, how to manage

the checkout system, what all the different library sections are,

and tons more. She's an amazing teacher!

Lastly, one of the coolest perks of being a volunteer is you

often get first dibs on the brand new books as they arrive at the

library. You'll be among the first to read the latest releases

before they even hit the shelves! How awesome is that?

our library the ultimate book paradise. Just imagine how proud
