“遵守”与“按照”的中译英表达

一、follow与obey

follow是一个常用的多义词，表示“遵守”的含义时，更多强调“遵照，听从”的意

义，如：

Follow the doctor’s advice when taking this medicine. 服用此药请遵医嘱。

His translation sounds a little clumsy as it follows the original too faithfully. 他

的译文过于忠实原文了，听起来有点别扭。

obey 则是最常用也是最通俗的一个表示“遵守”意义的词，如：

obey the rules and regulations. 遵守规章制度

Obeying orders is the bounden duty of soldiers. 服从命令是军人的天职。

Everybody must obey the law，be he a common citizen or a high-ranking

official. 无论是普通公民还是高级官员，人人都要守法。

二、conform to，adhere to

conform to 与 adhere to 是两个具有“遵守”含义的固定搭配，在此项含义下，二

者可以互换，但要特别注意它们一些其它常用含义，否则会影响我们对具体句义的理解。

conform其常用含义除“遵照，适应”外，还有“符合，一致”与“顺从”。可根据

具体语境选择更合适的用词。

adhere是不及物动词，其基本含义是“粘附，附着”，与介词 to 构成固定搭配，有

两个引伸含义“遵守，坚持”、“追随，拥护”，如：

The young couple adhered to their marriage in spite of the resistance from

their parents. 这对年轻人不顾双方父母的反对而坚持结婚。

The family members adhere to their respective political parties. 一家人却拥护

不同的政党。 Both parties promised to adhere to the contract to be signed the

following day. 双方都允诺遵守转天就要签署的合同。

三、observe

observe 是个多义词，但其常用表达义项是“察觉到”、“观测”、“评论”等，它

的第四项含义为“遵守，奉行 (规章、法律、习俗等)”，如:

All the terms of a contract must be strictly observed. 必须严格遵守合同的所有条

款。

Successful safety programs may differ greatly in the emphasis placed on

certain aspects of the program. Some place great emphasis on mechanical

guarding. Others stress safe work practices by observing rules and regulations.
