World War II was a global conflict that took place from 1939 to 1945

and involved most of the world's nations forming two opposing

military alliances the Allies and the Axis The war involved the

mobilization of over 100 million military personnel and resulted in

the deaths of over 70 million people making it the deadliest conflict

in human history At the center of this global conflagration were the

political and military leaders who shaped the course of the war and

left an indelible mark on the 20th century

One of the most prominent figures of World War II was Adolf Hitler

the Führer or leader of Nazi Germany Hitler was born in Austria in

1889 and became involved in far-right German nationalist politics in

the aftermath of World War I He joined the Nazi Party in 1919 and

quickly rose through the ranks eventually becoming the party's

leader in 1921 Hitler capitalized on the economic and political

turmoil in Germany following the Treaty of Versailles to gain popular

support and in 1933 he was appointed Chancellor of Germany He

then proceeded to consolidate power abolishing all other political

parties and establishing a totalitarian dictatorship under his rule

As the Führer of Nazi Germany Hitler was the driving force behind

Germany's aggressive expansionist policies in the 1930s which

ultimately led to the outbreak of World War II in Europe In 1939

Hitler ordered the invasion of Poland sparking the war in Europe Two

years later in 1941 he directed the invasion of the Soviet Union

codenamed Operation Barbarossa in a failed attempt to conquer the

Eastern Front Hitler's ambitions of creating a vast German empire

were fueled by his virulent antisemitism and racist ideology which

viewed Slavic and Jewish people as subhuman Under his leadership

the Nazis perpetrated the Holocaust the systematic genocide of six

million European Jews as well as millions of other ethnic and political

minorities

Despite early successes on the battlefield the tide began to turn

against Hitler and the Axis powers as the war progressed The entry

of the United States into the war in 1941 and the eventual alliance

between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union proved to be a

formidable challenge for the Axis Hitler's military strategies grew

increasingly erratic and desperate as Germany faced defeat on

multiple fronts In the final years of the war Hitler increasingly

withdrew from day-to-day operations hiding away in his

underground bunker in Berlin as the Allies closed in on the Nazi

capital
