[size=medium]It is well-known that peace and development are the two principal themes of the present world. For China, which has enjoyed peace for a very long time, its theme is sustainable development in my opinion. What, you may wonder, is sustainable development? According to my advisor, who is an expert in political economics, sustainable development is the one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In order to achieve sustainable development in China, I think, we should take the following measures:

First of all, we must save stored sources of energy, such as fossil fuels or nuclear fuel, which are not renewable. We can make full use of hydroelectric and wood energy because they represent completely renewable sources.

Second, we must maintain ecological balance. We should severely prohibit illegal hunting and protect wildlife, especially endangered species. We should also prevent overgrazing, overfishing, soil erosion etc. from happening.

Last but not least, we should continue controlling our population. At present, China’s population is still growing rapidly. It is reported that every year the population of our country increases by an extra 150 million and China encountered another baby boom bubble during the 1990s. Obviously, overpopulation is one of the greatest barriers that prevent China’s economy from achieving sustainable growth. Therefore, to control population growth more strictly is indispensable to China’s sustainable economic development.
