line from a heartfelt poem Feng Duan wrote to his fiancee Chen Lianfang in 1955.

Feng is now 94 and Chen 90, and they have been married for more than half a century. Feng, an academic at the

Chinese Academy of Sciences, may not be a professional poet but for 64 years, Feng has written countless love poems to

his wife. On every important anniversary or festival, Feng would send a poem to Chen. In 1978, when Chen’s cancer

surgery succeeded, Feng created more than ten poems to celebrate his wife’s recovery. Chen used a red suitcase to store

these love poems. The academic has also translated many English, French and German poems into classical Chinese.

The couple was introduced to each other by a common friend in 1953 and Feng sent two paper copies of poems to

Chen as a gift.

“As long as I think of you, a beam of sunshine lights up my heart,” Feng wrote.

Chen recalled the first time Feng invited her to his dormitory to have a cup of tea and she thought the cup was made of

frosted glass. As the two became closer, Chen often visited the academic’s dorm. She realized that the cup was the only

one poor Feng owned. The opaque (不透明的) cup was not frosted glass but common glass stained with toothpaste.

22.(8分)Many managers believe that overworking is an evidence of devotion from their employees’ side. Still few

others regard this custom as a threat to the workers’ work-life balance, which may negatively influence the level of

productivity and efficiency.

Employees at Amsterdam design studio Heldergroen won’t be putting in much overtime. Not in the office, at any

rate. That’s because every day at 6:00 pm, their desks, tables and other work surfaces, with their computers attached,

are lifted to the ceiling by steel cables

(绳索)normally used to move heavy propsin theatrical productions. If you

(道具)leave a half-eaten sandwich on your desk, you’re out of luck.

“Once the chairs and other workplace paraphernalia are cleared away, the space is free for evening and weekend

use as a dance floor, yoga studio ... or anything else you can think of – the floor is actually yours, ” doctor Sander

Veenendaal said.

In a way, the office space itself is working overtime for Heldergroen, bringing about lots of publicity and carrying

an enlightened(有启发的)message of career-life balance far and wide.”We think that doing activities like this makes it

easier for people to work here,” says Veenendaal. “You know when it is time to relax or do something else that inspires

you.”

That sounds awesome. There’s just one catch. In the morning, the desks reappear and everybody has to go back to

work.

1、What can we learn about the employees at Heldergroen?

A.They are unwilling to work late

B.They are discouraged from working overtime

C.They are persuaded to leave the office earlier

23.(8分)A bite from a tsetse fly is an extremely unpleasant experience. To make matters worse, several species of

tsetse fly can transmit diseases. One of the most dangerous is a parasite(寄生虫) that causes "sleeping sickness".

After the initial bite, sleeping sickness symptoms often start with a fever, headaches and aching muscles. As the

illness goes on, those infected become increasingly tired, which is where it gets its name.

It is worth noting that sleeping sickness is no longer as deadly as it once was. In the early 20th Century several

hundred thousand people were infected each year. By the 1960s the disease was considered "under control" and had

reached very low numbers, making its spread more difficult. But in the 1970s there was another major infection, which

took 20 years to control. Since then, better screening programs and earlier treatments have reduced the number of cases

dramatically. In 2000 this figure dropped to fewer than 3,000. The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes the disease

will be completely removed by 2020. More problematically, a series of new studies have shown that the parasite is more

complicated than previously believed.

Sleeping sickness has always been considered—and analyzed—as a blood disease, because the parasites can readily

be discovered in the blood of its victims. However, in a recent study found that the parasite can stay in the skin and fat,

as well as in the blood. There may even be a higher density(密度)of the parasite in the skin than in the blood. That

means a person can have no symptoms but still both harbor the disease and spread it. The finding could explain the

mysterious 1970s infection, and why the disease can spring up in areas that had previously been cleared.

1、What's the danger of a tsetse fly bite?

A.It makes people sleepy. B.It causes skin disease.

C.It brings about deaths. D.It transmits deadly parasites.

2、What can we infer about sleeping sickness from Paragraph 3?

A.It's still a threat to human health.

B.It's not that dangerous at present.

C.It's incurable in the early 20th century.

D.It's completely under control in the 1960s.

3、What does the underlined "harbor" most probably mean?

A.carry B.resist C.exchange D.hide

4、What does the latest research indicate according to the passage?

A.Sleeping sickness is a blood disease.

B.Skin is more suitable for the parasite to grow.

C.Sleeping sickness can be spread with no signs.

D.Parasites in the skin caused the 1970s infection.

of my closet.

Some of my friends, like some of my shoes, were silly mistakes. They never did fit properly, and they always felt

appeal and value just increase with wear and time. These are friends who stay in touch and stand by me—as if they and

Jane is pair essential, timeless pumps that I wear often and would be lost without. With this classic, my basic needs

and comfort level are assured—leaving me time and energy for fun. I can move gracefully from day to night, from work

to play, from jokes to discussion. My step is light; laughter comes easily and I am ready for adventure.

Georgiana is my pair of standard white Keds—familiar, comfortable and good for all seasons. I’ve had them since

long before. They are part of my childhood. They take me home, and I am a kid again diving into the ocean on a hot

summer day. They have been up the hill and through the mud with me. They keep me moving forward, even when

putting one foot in front of the other feels like the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I know I can slip them tomorrow and

after. I am indebted to these lovely worn sneakers.

In the shoe rack of life, these are the friends I cherish. They are the base upon which I stand. They accompany me

on my chosen path, regardless of where it leads or how bumpy or how humpy or winding it gcts.

29、Dear Jim,

I am very glad to know that you are interested in Teachers’ Day in China. We celebrate Teachers’ Day every

September 10th. On that day, we will send best wishes and express our thanks to our dear teachers for their hard work.

Some students write Thank-you cards to our teachers; others would like to send them beautiful flowers. Sometimes we

prepare performances or give them hand-made gifts. In our school, we also have a tradition of serving tea to each

teacher in the morning.

I think Teachers’ Day is a meaningful celebration. It gives us the chance to show our respect and love to our

teachers. What’s more, respecting teachers is also a tradition for us Chinese.

Do you have a similar celebration for teachers? Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Yours,

Li Hua
