A free-trade agreement (FTA) between Australia and China could lead to the Australian wool industry providing for almost half the demand for woollen garments in China's booming clothing market.

The Australian Financial Review reported this week that the WTO (textile Export Quota) FTA had the potential to lead to Australia providing up to 8 per cent of China's total wool requirements. China has reportedly shown no interest in the mulesing issue.

Australia is well placed to overcome one of the key challenges to conquering the China market - the demand for machine washable garments due to the costs of dry cleaning in that country.

AWI has developed five separate ventures with Chinese businesses, partnering with them to co-manufacture a range of woollen products to satisfy consumer demand.

It has proven experience in addressing cultural demands through product innovation, such as the Easy Care range of ready-to-wear, machine washable, garments which have been a major success in the UK and Europe and are currently being introduced to the US.
