I've been before a lot of time for basketball games 我曾经来这里看过多场篮球比赛

as my sun played at the Palestra, played on the basketball team 因为我儿子就在体育系 是

and my Yankees underwear and my Yankee toe warmers 还有底裤和暖脚贴

but not my Yankee cap 但不会带洋基队的帽子

but still, I'll be honest with you 同样 我也要说句真心话

I'm a little nervous 我还有点紧张

I'm not speaking at a graduation of this magnitude 我还没在这种规模的毕业典礼上讲过话

it's a little overwhelming 有点缺乏心理准备

This is out of my comfort zone 这让我不知所措

and you dress me up in army fatigues 你们可以让我穿上陆军迷彩服

or throw me on top of a moving train 或是让我跳上飞奔的火车

someone said unstoppable or.. 有人刚才说过这个

or Alonzo from Training Day. I can do that 或是《训练日》里面的阿伦佐 这都没问题

But a commencement speech? It's a very serious affair 但是毕业典礼呢？这是非常郑重的活

动

and a very different ballgame 和以往参加的活动大有不同

There's literally thousands and thousands of people here 台下坐着成千上万的听众

And for those who say 有人会说

Well, you're a movie star, millions of people watch you 你可是电影明星哦 无数的人都看着你

and watch you speak all the time 无数人看着你讲话

Oh, that's true. that's technically true 没错 严格意义上讲 这话不假

But I'm not actually there in the theater 但我从没坐在电影院里

watching them watching me. I think that make sense 看着台下的观众在看我 我觉得是这个

道理

I mean I'm not there when they cough, or fidget around 我是说 当他们咳嗽或烦躁的时候

or pull out their iPhone and text their boyfriend 或是掏出iPhone给男友发短信的时候

or scratch their behinds, or whatever is it 或是在找挠后背之类的

known when in the movie theater 就是在电影院里常坐的事情

But from up here, I can see every single one of you 但在这里 我可以看到你们每一个人

And that makes me uncomfortable 这让我感觉怪怪的

So please, don't pull out your iPhones and texts 所以拜托大家 不要掏出手机发短信

no texts to your boyfriend until after I'm done, please 不要给男友发短信 直到我讲话结束

But if you have to scratch your behinds, I mean 但如果你要挠挠后背的话

I understand, go ahead 我能理解 请便吧

I was thinking about the speech, what I should say 我曾思考着 要来这里讲些什么

I figured the best way to keep your attention 我觉得 如果要让你们专心听我说话

would be to talk about something, you know 最好讲一些…… 你们懂的

really like juicy Hollywood stuff like.. 比如好莱坞的花边新闻一类的事

I thought I could talk about me and Russell Crowe 我曾想过要讲讲我和罗素·克洛二人

getting into arguments on the set of American Gangster or.. 在拍摄《美国黑帮》时的激烈

争论

But no. You're a group of high-minded intellectuals 但是放弃了 毕竟你们都是高尚的知识分

子

You're not interested in that 才不会喜欢听这些呢

Or maybe not 但也说不定哦

I thought about a private moment I had at backstage 我也想过要讲讲我和安吉丽娜·茱莉二

But I say, no, I don't think so. This is an Ivy League school 但后来又觉得不妥 这里可是常春

So, I was back to square one, feeling the pressure 所以 我白折腾了一圈 压力真的好大

And there were other good reasons for me to show up 我来这里的原因不止这个

Sure, I got an Academy Award 诚然 我获得过奥斯卡金像奖

but I never had something called Magic Meatball 但我还没在餐车前排队等候半个小时后

after waiting in line for half an hour at a food truck 品尝 魔法狮子头 的味道

Yes, I've talked face-to-face with President Obama 诚然 我曾和奥巴马总统面对面交流过

but I never met a guy named Kweder 但从没跟一个叫Kweder的家伙说过话

who sings bad cover songs at Smokes on a Tuesday night 他星期二会在Smokes那里高唱

Well, here it is 我的意思是

I've found that nothing in life is worthwhile 我发现 如果你不冒险

unless you take risks 生活中的一切都会是毫无价值

Nelson Mandela said 纳尔逊·曼德拉曾说过

There is no passion to be found playing small 如果安于现状 生活将平淡无奇

in settling for a life that's less 尤其对于那些有能力

than the one you're capable of living 去过更精彩人生的人来说

Now I'm sure in your experiences 我肯定在你们过去的经历中

in school, in applying to college 无论是在学校 在申报大学

in picking your major 挑选专业

in deciding what you want to do with life 还是在你们决定人生中要做些什么时

I'm sure people have told you 总会有人提醒你们

to make sure you have something to fall back on 总会有人提醒你们要记着给自己 留条后

to make sure you have something to fall back on, Honey 提醒你们说 亲爱的 为自己留条

But I've never understood that concept 但我对此表示无法理解

Having something to fall back on 要 留后路

If I'm going to fall 如果我会跌倒失败

I don't want to fall back on anything, except my faith 我不想留什么后路 除了自己的信念

I want to fall forward 我要 向前倒

I figure at least this way 这样 至少我能看见

I'll see what I'm about to hit 我会栽在什么问题上

Here's what I mean 我来讲讲它的含义

You've got to take risks 你必须去冒险

And I'm sure you've probably heard that before 我想你们以前一定也听过这些

But I want to talk about why it is so important 但是 我想告诉你们这为什么如此重要

I've got three reasons, and then you can pick up your iPhones 我要说三个理由 然后你们

就可以玩iPhone了

First, you will fail at some point in your life 首先 你在生命中一定会经历失败

Accept it. You will lose 接受这个事实吧 失败是无可避免的

You will embarrass yourself 你会感到窘迫

You will suck at something. There is no doubt about it 你会在某件事上逊透了 这点毫无疑问

That's probably not a traditional message for a graduation ceremony 也许这不是常规毕

But, hey, I'm telling you, embrace it 但是诸位 我希望你们能接受失败

Because it's inevitable 因为它不可避免

And I should know 而且我自己知道

In the acting business, you fail all the time 在演艺界 失败是常事

Early on my career 我刚出道时

I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical 我去试镜某部百老汇音乐剧中的角色

perfect role for me, I thought 当时我想这对我是再适合不过的角色了

except for the fact that I can't sing 除了我不会唱歌

So I'm in the wings. I'm about to go on stage 当我在后台 准备上台的时候

but the guy in front of me 我发现我前面表演的那个家伙

he singing like Pavarotti, he's just.. 他唱得简直就像帕瓦罗蒂

he's just going on, and on, and on 他在那里唱啊唱

and I am just shrinking 我感觉自己在变得越来越渺小

I'm getting smaller and smaller 越来越小

so they said, Oh, thank you very much. Thank you very much 评委说 谢谢 非常感谢

You'll be hearing from us 我们会给你消息的

So I come out with my little sheet music 然后我出台了 带着我的乐谱

and it was Just My Imagination by the Temptations 我要唱的是诱惑合唱团的《我的幻想》

that's what I came up with 我准备的就是这个

So I hand it to the accompanist, and she looks at it 我把乐谱递给伴奏者 她看了看乐谱

and looks at me and looks at the director, and just like.. 看了看我 又看看指挥 然后这幅

So, I start to, you know, I'm gonna sing like.. 我就那样开始唱了

and they're not saying anything 他们一言不发

So I'm thinking I must be getting better 所以我以为一定是我表现得越来越好了

so I start getting into it 正当我开始全身投入的时候

the director said, Thank you very much, Mr. Washington 导演说 非常感谢 华盛顿先生

So, I assume that I didn't get the job 我想我肯定是得不到那份工作了

But the next part of the audition, he called me back

不曾想 他们叫我去参加下一回合的试

the next part of the audition is the acting part of the audition 试演的下一回合是表演

I know Hey, OK, maybe I can't sing, but I know I can act 我想 虽然我歌唱得不好 但我

可以表演啊

So they paired me with this guy 他们把我跟刚才那家伙安排在一组

and again, I didn't know about musical theatre 然而我仍然对音乐厅全然不知

and musical theatre is big 音乐厅很大

so they can reach everyone all the way in the back, of a stadium like

后排的人都能听见

所以发声要注意让

and I'm more from a realistic, naturalistic kind of acting 而我的表演方式更像是现实生活

中的自然流露

you know, you actually talked to the person next to you 当时我的表演是跟

旁边那人说话

so I don't know what my line was what.. 我并不知道该怎么说我的台词 我的台

词是

hand me the cup 把杯子递给我

And his line was 他的台词是

Well, I would hand you the cup my dear 好 亲爱的 我会把杯子给你的

the cup would be there to be handed to you 杯子会递到你的手上

and I said 然后我说

OK. Should I give you the cup back? 好 那我还要把杯子还给你吗？

Oh, yes, you should give the cup back to me 是呀 你要把它还给我啊

bacause that is my cup 因为那是我的杯子

and it should be given back to me 应该把它还给我

I didn't get the job 我这工作又泡汤了

But here's the thing: I didn't quit. I didn't fall back 但重要的是 我没有放弃 我没有 往后倒

I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition 我从那里出来就开始准备下一次试演

and the next audition, and the next audition 再下一次 然后再下一次的试演

I prayed. I prayed, and I prayed 我不断祈祷 祈祷 再祈祷

but I continued to fail, and I failed, and I failed 但是我还是不断失败 失败 再失败

But it didn't matter. Because you know what? 但这并不要紧 你知道为什么吗？

there's an old saying 古话说得好

You hang around a barbershop long enough 在理发店外徘徊时间长了

sooner or later you will get a haircut 迟早有人会帮你理发

So, you will catch a break, and I did catch a break 你会等到你的机会的 而我确实也等到了

Last year I did a play called Fences on Broadway

乐剧

去年我在百老汇演一部叫《Fences》的音

someone talked about it. I won a Tony Award 刚才有人提到了 我还因此获得了Tony奖

And I didn't have to sing for it, by the way 当然在这出戏里 我并不需要唱歌

And here's the kicker 还有 最关键的是

it was at the Court Theater 这部音乐剧是在寇特剧院上演的

it was at the same theater 也就是30年前

that I failed that first audition 30 years prior 我第一次试演失败的那家剧院

The point is, and I'll put up the pace 所以我要说的就是 我会加快速度

the point is, every graduate here today 今天在座的所有毕业生

has the training and the talent to succeed 你们都有了成功所必需的学习和才能

But do you have guts to fail 然而你们有接受失败的勇气吗？

Here's my second point about failure 关于失败 我要说的第二个要点是

If you don't fail, you're not even trying 如果你没有失败过 说明你都没有好好尝试过

I'll say it again 我再说一遍

My wife told me this expression 我太太跟我说过这句经典的话

To get something you never had 要得到你从未拥有过的东西

Les Brown, a motivational speaker, he made an analogy about this 励志演讲者莱斯·布朗对

此打过一个比方

it says 讲的是

imagine you're on your deathbed 想象你快要去世了

and standing around your deathbed 围绕着在你临终的床沿的

are the ghosts representing your unfilled potential 是代表你未了心愿的幽魂

The ghosts of the ideas you never acted on 那些你没有付诸行动的想法的幽魂

The ghosts of the talents you didn't use 那些属于你却从没被启用的天赋的幽魂

And they're standing around your bed 而它们都围在你的床沿

I just got back from Africa, like just 2 days ago 我两天前刚从非洲回来

I just got back from South Africa, that's a beautiful country 我刚从南非回来 那是一个美

but there are places there with terrible poverty that need help 但那里有些地方仍然非常

Some of you have money. Some of you have patience 有些人有钱 有些人拥有耐心

Some have kindness. Some have love 有些人有善心 有些人心中充满爱

Some of you have the gift of long-suffering 有些人拥有历经艰苦而带来的果实

Whatever it is, whatever your gift is 不论你拥有的是什么 你的天赋是什 么

what are you going to do with what you have? 你打算怎么利用它们呢？

Alright, now here's my last point about failure 好了 现在我要讲关于失败的最后一点

Sometimes it's the best way to figure out where you're going

I began at Fordham University as a pre-med student 我最初是佛罕大学医科的预科生

I took a course 我学过一门课程叫 心...形...

I still can't say it 我连这个都说不好

I couldn't read it I could't say it, and I an sure couldn't pass it 我连这个也读不好 理所当然

也就挂科了

So, then I decided to go pre-law, then journalism 后来我就决定读法律预科 再后来是新闻

And with no academic focus 不知道应该专注于什么学科

my grades took off in their own direction 我的成绩进入了它自己的轨道

Yeah, down 没错一路向下

I was a 1.8 GPA, one semester 有一个学期 我的平均分只有1.8

and the university very politely suggested 学校很体面地建议我

it might be better to take some time off 考虑休学一段时间

I was 20 years old, I was at my lowest point 我当时20岁 我的人生到了最低谷

And then one day, and I remember the exact day 有一天 我清楚记得那一天

March 27th, 1975, I was helping out in the beauty shop 1975年3月27日 我在母亲的美

my mother owned a beauty shop in Mount Vernon 我母亲在Mount Vernon开了一家美容

I don't know personally, but I was looking in the mirror 之前我跟她没有来往 我当时在看

every time I looked at her, she kept giving me these strange looks 她就那样看着我 她的

So, she finally took the drier off her head 后 她把头上的风干机挪开

and she said something I'll never forget 跟我说了一句我永远不会忘记的

First of all, she said 她先是说

Somebody give me a piece of paper 过来个人 给我一张纸

Young boy, I have a prophecy, a spiritual prophecy 小伙子 我有种预感 一个发自心灵的预感

She said you are going to travel the world 她说 你会周游世界

and speak to millions of people 和上百万人沟通交流

now I'll remind you, I'm 20 years old, I'm flunked out school 我得提醒大家 我当时20岁

刚辍学回家

In fact, like a wise-ass, I'm thinking to myself 事实上 我自作聪明地认为

Maybe she's got something in a crystal ball 她也许是通过一个水晶球

about me getting back to college in the fall 算出我会在秋季重返学校的

But maybe she was on to something 但也许她真的预见到了什么

while working as a counselor at a YMCA camp in Connecticut

Let me conclude with this one final point 让我用这最后一点来结束
