force, power, strength

一、force 名词。意思是“力量、势力、武力”。指人或物撞击或推动

物体时所用的力，也可用于爆炸或风暴的爆炸力、冲击力。此词既有实

际意义也有抽象意义。force还可以作动词表示“强迫、迫使”等意义。

例如：

He fell to the ground under the force of the blow.他被一拳击倒在

地。

The moral force is on our side. 道德的力量在我们这边。

The police had to use force to hold back the crowd.警察不得不使

用武力阻止人群。

The soldiers forced their prisoners to give up their arms. 士兵迫

使俘虏放下武器。(动词)

二、power 名词。意思是“力量、能力、权力”。指人体某部位的力

量，但一般不用以指搬动或握托支撑重物的能力。从物理学上讲，更多

指机械、爆炸或大自然的力量。例如：

She has great power in her shoulders. 她的肩膀有力。

The power of the wind can be harnessed to produce electricity.

风力可以利用来发电。

Congress has power to declare war. 议会有权宣告战争。

三、strength 名词。意思是“力量、力气、体力、强度、效力”。侧

重指承受重物的力量。例如：

He has been doing weight-training to build up his strength. 他一

直在进行举重训练以增强体力。

I don't have the strength to carry you any further.我再也抱不动你

了。

The clouds diminished the strength of the sunlight.这些云减少了

阳光的强度。

（for） long, （for） a long time

一、for long 和 for a long time都用于表示时间，但用法有异。肯定

句用for a long time:

We have been friends for a long time. 我们是老朋友了。

二、for long只有与too、enough、as、so、seldom等词连用时才

能用于肯定句。例如：

I stayed out in the sun for too long. 我在太阳底下待的时间太长了。

You have been waiting long enough. 你等得够久的了。

三、都可用于疑问句，但for long较常用。例如；

Were you there for long ? 你在那儿很久吗？

四、两词用于否定句时，有时含义不同：例如：

I haven't been here for a long time. 我已经很久没有来这儿了。

I haven't been here for long. 我到这儿没有多长时间。

for， of

for 和of 多以介词的形式出现，但在动词不定式复合结构中，常引出

一个逻辑主语来说明不定式表示的动作是谁做的。我们把此时的for和

of称之为小品词。那么在什么情况下用for，什么情况下用of呢？在

不定式复合结构“It is (was) + adj + for(of) sb. to do sth.中，常用for

引导，但在形容词kind、good、nice、wise、unwise、clever、silly、

wrong、right、foolish、stupid、careless、considerate、rude、naughty、

impolite作表语时，则常用of引导。因为这些形容词能表明人的特点，

在逻辑上能够和不定式的动作执行者构成主表语关系。例如：

It is not hard for one to do a bit of good.一个人做点好事并不难。

（One is not hard.不能成立的，讲不通的）

It is not easy for him to master a foreign language.掌握一门外语

是不容易的。(He is not easy.不能成立的，讲不通的)

It is kind of you to think so much of us.难为你这样替我们着想。

（You are kind.能构成主表关系，也能讲通）

It's unwise of them to turn down the proposal.他们拒绝采纳这个
