The Research and Development of SCADA

in Petroleum Industry

 

1.  Primary Purpose

SCADA is short for “supervisory control and data acquisition”. It is a special software of supervisory control and data acquisition. It lies in the monitoring layer of software platform and development environment which belongs to automatic control system. SCADA can provide monitoring the automatic control system for users by flexible configuration method.

In petroleum industry, there are more and more projects of industrial automation field. The demand for SCADA is getting greater and greater. For the present, the number of companies which have configuration software is small. Furthermore, there are much rarer configuration products of petroleum among this software. We always use foreign software in the engineering projects, but the price is very expensive. In view of this, it is necessary to develop the SCADA of our own intellectual property rights before someone else. It can reduce cost and bring in great profits for enterprises if we have this software. More than this, it can also strengthen the competitiveness. We can provide the better humanistic service which allows you to customize the function to fit your needs.

SCADA which we will develop mainly includes the following: front-end processor module, graphics editor module, real-time database module, historical database module. The SCADA has characteristic of real-time multitask, open interface, easy to use, various function, run stably etc. It can make monitoring and controlling the production process of oil and gas field. Not only that, it can provide convenient to production management and maintenance.

The architecture of SCADA is complicated and the capability is powerful. The following problems are to be solved by SCADA.

1. How to execute data exchange between SCADA and equipment acquisition and monitoring?

2. Set up connection between data of equipment and each element of computer graphic picture.

3. Process the alert of data and system.

4. Store history data and support query in these data.

5. Generate and print reports

2.  Brief Description

Many problems usually exist in petroleum industry, such as the manufacturing process is very complicated, the conditions are tough. For this purpose, we need a real solution. Configuration software can raise productivity and reduce the cost of enterprises. Also, it can strengthen competitiveness. We own a professional team including 15 key technicians. We plan to begin in September 2011 and bring out a molded product before October 30, 2014. That is to say, it will take us more than 3 years to finish this software. The product will be applied in real-time monitor, data processing, abnormal alarm, safety management etc.

2.1               Measurable Goals

1. Support for web publishing. Realize authorization access on the Internet.

2. Make SCADA have strong data handling capacity. It can provide calculations and data processing to meet a requirement of control, such as range transform, alarm, history data record, PID control, flow measurement, etc.

3. Realize a redundant system that is reliable. The system supports dual or multi servers hot backup. Also, it supports the redundancy of IO, host, communication. It can guarantee that the system is safety and reliable.

4. Take the place of SCADA of foreign countries and reduce the enterprise cost by 30%.

5. The SCADA is to be put into use before Dec, 31, 2014.

6. The average speed of query about history memory far exceeds 300,000 records, per second.

7. The average number of query about real-time data far exceeds 470,000 bytes, per second.

3.  Requirements

R-1. Support Client/Server structure. Support distribute servers and distribute clients. Support dual or multi servers hot backup.

R-2. Realize lifelike graphic system. Describe the real production process. Design the lifelike effect of graphics.

R-3. Require a interface with third party programs in order to share data conveniently.

R-4. Have the reporting function and display record flexibly according to different user requirements.

R-5. Supply display function of indicator diagrams and current charts in order to meet the professional need of monitoring and controlling the oil well.

R-6. The system should have mechanism of safety management. For security, we should give users different access to operate the system according to their different roles.

R-7. Require to realize the deal with abnormal errors. The SCADA can supply the functions of alarm, indication, recollections of the errors.

R-8. Realize a real-time multitask system. That is to say, we can execute multiple tasks simultaneously, such as data acquisition and output, data processing and the implementation of algorithm, graph display and man-machine interaction, real-time data storage, information retrieval, etc.

5.  Potential Problems / Solutions

As a matter of fact, in view of the characteristics of powerful functions, complicated architects and quite difficult for development about configuration software. We will have many problems just as follows.

1. How to choose the team members? How to satisfy other conditions of a team just like their technical skill and teamwork spirit?

2. Does the company support this product? It may lead to losses of developers if we don’t have enough money to finish the project. This will cause fatal harm to the development progress.

3. The comprehensive debugging of software and hardware also is a problem. SCADA involves reading data from instrumentation. It has some demand to real-time capability. During the process of developing and after developing, it is a problem that how to debugging all the equipment together and how to realize hot backup of the host and the auxiliary computers.

To solve these problems, we present several solutions as follows.

1. About developers, we try to choose someone who has strong learning ability and loves technological development.

2. We can invest in this product through other projects which get profits.

3. Buy or hire essential instrumentation. When it is necessary, we can send all the developers to the actual project. They do the development in industrial field and debug the equipment in the practical production in order to make the capabilities and the functional requirements realize.
